Whois Accuracy Program

The Whois Accuracy Program includes:

Validate the presence of data for all fields required under Subsection 3.3.1 of the
Agreement in a proper format for the applicable country or territory.
Validate that all email addresses are in the proper format according to RFC 5322 (or
its successors).
Validate that telephone numbers are in the proper format according to the ITU-T
E.123 notation for international telephone numbers (or its successors).
Validate that postal addresses are in a proper format for the applicable country or
territory as defined in UPU S42 address templates (as they may be updated) or other
standard formats.

EU Registrars Empowered to Seek New RAA Data Retention Exemption

ICANN’s Board approved the new Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) on June 27th, and its Resolution doing so noted that “the Board has accepted the GAC Advice in the Beijing Communiqué that the "the 2013 Registrar Accreditation Agreement should be finalized before any new gTLD contracts are approved.”" -- and cited as a “highlight” that “The 12 Law Enforcement Recommendations that served as the impetus for these negotiations are all addressed” including “new data retention obligations”. However, a newly disclosed June 6th letter reveals that ICANN was already aware that EU-based registrars would have solid grounds to seek an exemption from those very data retention obligations.

ICANN authorized a study conducted by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the United Kingdom, to analyze gTLD domain names to measure whether the percentage of privacy/proxy use among domains engaged in illegal or harmful Internet activities is significantly greater than among domain names used for lawful Internet activities.
