The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is responsible for managing the domain name system and ICANN developed the new gTLD program in order to increase competition and choice in the domain name space. The Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) - launching March 26 - is the most important rights protection mechanism built into ICANN’s new gTLD program. It allows brand owners to submit their trademark data into one centralized database, prior to and during the launch of new gTLDs. Simply put: The TMCH is a one-stop-solution for protecting your brand in the new gTLD era.

Any trademark holder, private person, or company can submit their trademark to the Clearinghouse. Download the Clearinghouse guidelines for all detailed information regarding eligibility. The TMCH protects brands in two ways: with a Sunrise Service and a Trademark Claims Service.

With the first new gTLD delegation likely just a matter of weeks away, registries and registrars are reporting problems getting access to the Trademark Clearinghouse for testing purposes.

The controversial “Trademark+50″ anti-cybersquatting service for new gTLDs is set to go live October 11 or thereabouts, ICANN announced last night.

Trademark+50 is the name given to a function of the Trademark Clearinghouse that enables trademark owners to obtain protection for strings that they’ve previously won at UDRP proceedings.

Number of records in Trademark Clearinghouse doubles since the middle of July.

As of the end of August, the Trademark Clearinghouse for new top level domain names has 10,398 trademark records. That’s double the amount as of the middle of July.
