US government takes ‘historic’ step, aims to shed control of Internet’s infrastructure
The U.S. government Friday it will give up its most direct means of control over the Internet’s infrastructure, but said it will insist that the job be taken on by a group that includes the private sector and other interested parties, not just multiple governments.

The Last Days of Cheap Domain Names: U.S. Giving Up Control over ICANN
The world might be coming to the last days of cheap domain names, or easily purchasable domain names, because the U.S. is handing over control of assigning website addresses to a non-government entity. The move, which is described as the final phase of an effort to privatize and globalize the management of domain names, would push domain name assignment control into the hands of international groups and national governments claiming say over assignment of their local top level domains.

United States government set to remove last elements of Internet control after decades
The US government has reportedly announced this week that it is loosening its grip over the Internet after incubating and overseeing it for decades.
The Department of Commerce gradually resigned from those duties through a contract with a nonprofit organization called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The U.S. Is About To Relinquish Control of the Internet's Address Book. That's a Big Deal.
At is almost axiomatic in Washington, that the bureaucracy buries news of which it is not proud with a release late in the day on a Friday afternoon. Though it is a bit harsh to say so, one suspects that the Department of Commerce felt that way about its announcement yesterday that the United States would relinquish part of its controlling role in managing the Internet Domain Name System (DNS). In effect, the last remaining legal vestige of American control of the network will vanish next year. Our stewardship of the network will transition to an international non-profit that may, or may not, have the capabilities required. That’s a big deal. To understand why requires a bit of explanation.

US government to get out of Internet naming business
A division of the U.S. Commerce Department said on Friday it would give up control of the group that manages much of the architecture of the Internet, including the parceling out of domain names.
The National Telecommunications and Information Administration said in a statement it would shift those tasks to "the global multistakeholder community."

Administrator of Domain Name System, ICANN, Launches Global Multistakeholder Accountability Process
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today launched a process to transition the role of the United States Government relating to the Internet’s unique identifiers system.
ICANN’s announcement comes on the heels of an historic announcement today by the U.S. Government stating that it is ready to transfer its stewardship of the important Internet technical functions to the global Internet community. The U.S. Government’s current responsibilities to be transitioned include the procedural role of administering changes to the Domain Name System’s (DNS) to the authoritative root zone file - the database containing the lists of names and addresses of all top-level domains – as well as serving as the historic steward of the unique identifiers registries for Domain names, IP addresses, and protocol parameters.

You, ICANN. You can run this global internet. We quit, says US govt
The US Department of Commerce is ready to leave the keys to the internet's worldwide DNS system in the hands of non-profit net overseer ICANN.
The department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is charged with stewarding the administration of the internet and managing the authoritative root zone file of the planet's DNS structure. Since 1998, it has contracted that job to ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), specifically its Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) wing.

The Internet Is About to next giant evolutionary leap
The U.S. plan to relinquish stewardship of key technical functions that ensure the Internet runs properly drew praise and criticism over the weekend. If the process goes smoothly, it shouldn’t affect the day-to-day Internet experience for users, but the shift, which was announced Friday by U.S. officials, represents an important development in the evolution of the Internet.

Why is the U.S. surrendering control of the Internet? (And why should you care?)
Al Gore may not have “invented the Internet,” but Uncle Sam has always held the keys. Until now.
In what’s been described as a bit of a surprise move, the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration has announced it intends to transition “key Internet domain name functions” over to the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN ), the group that’s responsible for much of the technical underpinning and standards that define the global Internet. Boring news? Perhaps – but it may also be one of the most consequential things to happen to the global Internet in decades. Here’s everything you need to know about the U.S. giving up “control of the Internet.”

Questions and No Answers to US Oversight transition, ICANN's Role and Future of Internet Governance
Traditionally, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) coordinates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions, which are key technical services critical to the continued operations of the Domain Name System (DNS). The IANA functions include: (1) the coordination of the assignment of technical protocol parameters including the management of the address and routing parameter area (ARPA) top-level domain; (2) the administration of certain responsibilities associated with Internet DNS root zone management such as generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD) Top-Level Domains; (3) the allocation of Internet numbering resources; and (4) other services. ICANN performs the IANA functions under a U.S. Government contract.
